In order to give continuity to the safety tips when driving with rain, we have listed a few reminder of what we can do to protect ourselves and to help the numbers of accidents on rainy days to decrease. Only through awareness can you change the behavior of a driver.
Use the fog lights
The use of low light during the day on highways is mandatory as a safety measure on the roads. At night the visibility naturally becomes much more compromised and the need to use light from headlights and fog light is essential. High light is necessary and important to illuminate a greater distance, especially at night with the road with fewer vehicles and with the risk of animals on the track. The low light focuses more on the floor in front of the vehicle, as well as the front fog lights. The need for light at night, in addition to improving its visibility, makes other drivers see it.
Slow down
Reduce vehicle speed. Driving at high speed with rain is extremely dangerous. Braking the car in these conditions, has great chances of causing an accident. The faster the vehicle is, the less control over it the driver will have, especially because of the risk of skidding. Driving at reduced speed allows for control, proper visibility and safe braking conditions.
Look out for the lines and studs
On roads without lighting, it can be very difficult to see the track well. Mostly at night, with the wet lane reflecting the lights of the vehicles in the opposite direction. In these conditions, be aware and be guided by the bands and lines, by the studs or cat’s eye as they are also known. Keeping your eyes on the tracks reduces the risk of visibility due to the headlights of the cars, especially in the curves and in relation to the shoulder.
Keep your distance
It seems obvious, but it is essential to keep an even greater distance on rainy days. Under normal conditions, the two-second rule is recommended. The calculation is very simple and fast, enough, visualize a point, a mark on the road where the vehicle is at the moment and counts until your car reaches this point. A safe distance is usually three seconds at high speed. For rainy days the minimum distance must be at least 6 seconds at low speed.
Overtaking
Most road accidents happen in overtaking or changing lanes. To overcome it, it is essential to increase the speed of the vehicle, to drive in the opposite direction, to overtake the vehicle and to return to the original track in front. It becomes a high-risk maneuver when it comes to overtaking with rain, wet track. Doing this requires that you have good visibility, awareness of the vehicle’s ability, be aware even of the vehicles ahead and the vehicle behind.
